Chances are, you may have already heard the term blog, but maybe a little unclear as to what one is or more importantly what it may be able to do for your small business. A blog is simply a website that provides information for users who may be interested in the subject matter discussed within the blog.
There are wide ranges of blogs out there today discussing topics on everything from movies to the latest tech gadgets. Blogging can be a smart and very effective way for you to connect with potential customers in a fresh new and exciting way.
When deciding on creating a blog for your business, the first thing you should do is identify what type information your customers are interested in.
For example if you own a bike shop chances are your customers may like to learn more about biking news, get consumer information on the latest bikes and accessories, or even get helpful tips that will make them better athletes.
Once you have an understanding of what your customers interests include, it’s time to start putting that information down on paper. Take a few hours per week to write a couple articles for your blog.
Don’t worry you are not writing a novel, just a short informative essay of about 100 – 150 words.
You don’t have to be fancy just speak to your customers in the tone and language that they understand. If your customers are “Techies” than talk techie to them, if your customers are “Foodies” than talk like a foodie.
The next thing you want to do is add the blog to your own business site or you can set up a separate website that links back to your site.
For example if Sharon owned a personal styling business with a website perfectstylebysharon.com she then decided to create a separate blog for both men and women called theperfectlystyledman.com and the perfectlystyledwoman.com in which she highlights the latest styles and trends and also provides simple grooming and beauty tips.
Once you’ve created your blog, tell your customers about it, ask them to visit the blog and tell you if it’s helpful to them and even ask them to give you ideas on what you should add to it. You should also ask your customers to tell their friends and family who may benefit from your blog to read it.
